American Woman Survives 40 Days Starving, Chained to Tree by Husband in India

An American woman, Lalita Kayi Kumar, who traveled to India a decade ago to study yoga and meditation, recently emerged from a harrowing ordeal.

She claims to have survived without food and water for an astonishing 40 days after being shackled to a tree by her former husband.

Kumar, a U.S. citizen, was discovered in a remote forest in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, approximately 25 miles from Goa.

A local shepherd found her emaciated and severely dehydrated, unable to speak. The iron chain that had bound her to the tree was broken by the shepherd, leading to her rescue.

Officers said Kumar met and married an Indian man while studying yoga in Tamil Nadu, the same province in southeast India where Kamala Harris’ grandfather comes from. The couple reportedly fell out and the ex-husband has now been charged with attempted murder.

According to the Indian Express, the police case is based on a letter written by Kumar, detailing her traumatic experience. She describes being injected with a substance causing extreme psychosis, resulting in a locked jaw and an inability to drink water. Her ex-husband allegedly left her to die in the forest.

“Injection for extreme psychosis which causes severe locked jaw and inability to drink any water. Need intravenous food… 40 days without food in forest—husband tied me to a tree in a forest and said I would die there,” the note read.

Authorities express skepticism about her survival, given the extreme conditions. Inspector Amol Chavan of Sawantwadi Police Station noted that she appeared mute and had likely been stuck there for at least 48 hours.

Kumar’s background remains a mystery, as she is currently unable to communicate.

“She is currently not in a position to talk. We are trying to get more details about her background,” said Saurabh Agarwal, superintendent of police in Sindhudurg, the area where she was found.

However, her U.S. passport and personal belongings, including an identity card with a Tamil Nadu address, were found with her. Despite her ordeal, she is now out of immediate danger but continues to suffer from psychiatric issues.

Police said she had been living in India for at least 10 years and that her visa had expired.

In a shocking turn of an event, the public and private development centre, a non-government organisation, (NGO) has revealed that over 53,000 inmates are awaiting trials across the 253 Correctional Centres in the country.

The non-governmental organisation, who hosted over 20 civil society organisations in Yola, the state capital to discuss the way forward on the huge number of inmates awaiting trials in correctional centres, disclosed this in a statement signed by the Head of Communication and Knowledge Management, Munachi Okoro.

Okoro stated, “The growing number of pretrial detainees, many held for years without trial under dire conditions, poses significant human rights concerns, overwhelming the justice system and correctional facilities.”

The statement added that the meeting will focus on communication strategies, resource management, and collaboration problem solving techniques for pro bono legal services.

Also, speaking at the meeting with the CSOs in Yola, the programme assistant of the centre, Hauwa Yusuf, said that the reforming of the pretrial detention in Nigeria phase ll project is supported by the US Department of State Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.

The Adamawa State Programme Officer Barr. Fatima Bello, while speaking on the overall objectives of the PPDC project, said that the project aimed at deploying over 370 law clinicians and 50 pro bono lawyers to provide legal representation to 1,750 detainees annually.

According to Bello, this will reduce the pretrial population, and it will strengthen Nigeria’s criminal justice system.

Furthermore, she added, “The project aims to support collective efforts towards achieving a reduction in awaiting trial inmates for which more than 70 per cent of those in correctional facilities across Nigeria are awaiting trial.”

However, Bello pointed out that the court administration and case management project is aimed at improving capacity to reduce the challenges in the justice sector.

“The CACM project focuses on addressing the gaps in structures for case management in the courts which are weak or absent in some cases, and for which there are no document backup systems in place,” he stated.
